In a world where outdoor recreation often remains inaccessible to individuals with disabilities, California Inclusive Sailing (CIS) shines as a beacon of change. Founded by Christian and Denise Buhl in 2014, CIS was born from a deep commitment to inclusivity and a desire to empower individuals of all abilities to enjoy the freedom of sailing.
The inspiration for CIS came from a close friend, John Pascal (JP), whose life took a dramatic turn after a poisoning accident at 31 left him with Parkinson’s Disease. An athlete at heart, JP was determined to continue his passion for sailing despite his condition. The discovery of the RS Venture, a 16-foot sailboat with adaptive seats, provided the perfect solution. These adaptive features allowed JP to sail comfortably, even on days when his Parkinson’s symptoms were particularly challenging.
The Buhls’ dedication to helping JP led to the establishment of CIS, with a mission to promote outdoor recreation by gifting adaptive sailboats to clubs interested in starting or expanding inclusive sailing programs. The involvement of the PIMCO Foundation, introduced by JP, has been instrumental in this journey. Their volunteers and generous donations have enabled CIS to acquire a fleet of four RS Ventures, distributed from San Diego to San Francisco.
CIS’s impact is far-reaching. The organization works closely with veterans from the Long Beach VA Hospital and Special Olympic Athletes, promoting inclusivity and community engagement. The ambassadors of CIS have identified ten clubs in California that are eager to start inclusive sailing programs, further extending the organization’s reach and impact.
The guiding principle of CIS is encapsulated in the three T’s: team, tools, and time. By assembling dedicated teams, providing the necessary adaptive tools, and investing time in training and support, CIS ensures that outdoor recreation becomes accessible to a broader audience. The organization’s motto, “Harness the wind, soak in the sunshine, and lift your spirits,” beautifully captures the essence of its mission.
Christian and Denise’s vision for CIS is a testament to the power of inclusivity and the transformative impact of adaptive sports. Through their tireless efforts, they are breaking down barriers and creating a world where everyone can experience the joy and freedom of sailing, regardless of their abilities.
