The Heart of California Inclusive Sailing: Empowering Through Adaptation

California Inclusive Sailing (CIS) stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals of all abilities. At the heart of CIS lies a powerful mission: to promote outdoor recreation by providing adaptive sailboats to clubs eager to start or expand inclusive sailing programs. This mission is deeply personal and profoundly impactful, stemming from the journey of founders Christian and Denise Buhl and their friend John Pascal (JP).

JP’s story is one of resilience and determination. A poisoning accident at the age of 31 left him with Parkinson’s Disease, but his athletic spirit remained unbroken. Determined to help JP continue his passion for sailing, Christian and Denise discovered the RS Venture, a 16-foot sailboat designed with side-by-side adaptive seats. This innovation allowed JP to sail comfortably, even on days when his symptoms were at their worst.

The Buhls’ commitment to inclusivity gave birth to CIS in 2014. The organization’s efforts were significantly bolstered by the PIMCO Foundation, thanks to JP’s introduction. PIMCO’s volunteers and generous donations enabled CIS to expand its fleet to four adaptive sailboats, covering areas from San Diego to San Francisco. These boats are more than just vessels; they are gateways to freedom, independence, and joy for countless individuals.

CIS’s influence extends beyond providing sailboats. The organization collaborates with veterans from the Long Beach VA Hospital and Special Olympic Athletes, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity. The ambassadors of CIS play a crucial role in this mission, helping to identify ten clubs in California that are ready to launch inclusive sailing programs.

The philosophy of CIS revolves around the three T’s: team, tools, and time. By assembling dedicated teams, equipping them with the necessary tools, and investing time into training and support, CIS ensures that more people can experience the great outdoors. The motto, “Harness the wind, soak in the sunshine, and lift your spirits,” encapsulates the essence of CIS’s mission.

Christian and Denise’s journey with CIS is a testament to the transformative power of inclusivity. Through their efforts, they have created a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the thrill of sailing and the freedom of the open sea.
